World Ocean Day
World Ocean Day

World Ocean Day is on Saturday, 8th June 2024.

Boaties, or boaters, play a crucial role in protecting our oceans. Here are five things you can do to help safeguard marine environments:

  1. Practice Responsible Waste Disposal:

    • Never throw trash or waste overboard. Dispose of all waste, including plastic, food scraps, and hazardous materials like oil and batteries, at designated facilities onshore.
  2. Use Eco-Friendly Products:

    • Choose non-toxic, biodegradable cleaning products for your boat to prevent harmful chemicals from entering the water. Also, use environmentally safe antifouling paints to reduce pollution.
  3. Avoid Sensitive Areas:

    • Be aware of and avoid anchoring in sensitive habitats like coral reefs, seagrass beds, and marine protected areas. Anchoring in these areas can cause significant damage to fragile ecosystems.
  4. Prevent Fuel Spills:

    • Be cautious when refueling your boat to prevent spills. Use fuel spill pads and funnels, and never overfill the tank. Regularly inspect and maintain your boat’s engine and fuel systems to prevent leaks.
  5. Respect Wildlife:

    • Maintain a safe distance from marine wildlife to avoid disturbing them. Follow local regulations regarding wildlife interactions, and never feed wild animals, as this can disrupt their natural behaviours and diets.
